Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA)

  1. Goal
Sanitation systems should be economically viable, socially acceptable, technically and institutionally appropriate, and protect health, the environment and natural resources. SuSanA's assets are knowledge, experience, creativity & diverse membership.
  2. Challenge
Despite intense activity and some considerable achievements, the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of safe drinking water and basic sanitation was not met by the 2015 deadline. Several billion people worldwide lack access to basic or safe sanitation.
  3. Need for Action
SuSanA works for a world in which all people have access to adequate sanitation, regardless of gender, age, income, culture or location. Sanitation systems are important contributors to broader sustainable development.
  4. Measures
SuSanA provides its members forums for discussion and analysis, structures to support collaboration, and a range of channels for effective communication. We provide policy advice, practical guidance and up to date knowledge about sanitation.
  5. Cooperation Partner
Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), SKAT Foundation, Earwig, Cewas, Terre des Hommes, FAO
  6. Impact
SuSanA is not an organisation or a legal entity but an informal network of partners and individual members who share a common vision on sustainable sanitation and who want to contribute to achieving the SDGs, in particular SDG6.
  7. Special Quality of the Project; Suitability of the Organization
Since 2007, SuSanA has been providing a platform for coordination and collaborative work. It connects members to a community of people with diverse expertise and opinions. It contributes to policy dialogue through joint publications and meetings.
