-
Goal
The project aims to systematically stabilize elephant populations, reduce human-elephant conflict, and promote sustainable non-lethal wildlife management.
-
Challenge
Humane World for Animals aims to mitigate the decline of African Savanna elephants by stabilizing their populations through immunocontraception, reducing human-elephant conflicts, and promoting sustainable wildlife management practices.
-
Need for Action
South Africa’s elephants are endangered due to poaching, habitat loss, and human-elephant conflicts, which threaten their survival and ecological balance. Without action, the risk of local extinctions within the next decade is high.
-
Measures
Humane World for Animals aims to manage nearly every female elephant in South Africa, work closely with communities to know how best to engagement elephants, and help establish laws protecting elephants and communities long in to the future.
-
Cooperation Partner
Humane World for Animals collaborates with local farmers and reserve managers, the University of Pretoria to develop vaccines and research, and the governments of South Africa, Mozambique, and Eswatini to create lasting change.
-
Impact
To date, we have treated over 1,600 elephants in 49 reserves. South Africa recognizes our work as the model elephant management system. Neighboring countries have requested Humane World for Animals' assistance in expanding the program in 2024.
