Goutte d'eau - a child support network

Stiftung

Das Wichtigste in Kürze

Goutte d’eau – a child support network (GEcsn) is a non-political, non-religious Swiss foundation. It was created in 1996 by a group of young people who, after discovering the extreme poverty and unsustainable conditions in which street children lived, decided to create a foundation to raise funds in Switzerland and build up projects to assist the most vulnerable and marginalised children of Cambodia. GEcsn started working in Cambodia in 1997 first with street children and then expanded its programs to safe migration when confronted to illegal migration and child-trafficking while working in Poipet (border between Cambodia and Thailand) from 1999 on. With the Thai and Cambodian government, UNICEF, IOM and different Cambodian NGO's it launched a large program to prevent illegal migration and assist victims of trafficking in Poipet in 2001. Very fast, it witnessed that many children, repatriated from Thailand, had intellectual disabilities making them more ‘profitable’ – attracting more sympathy – than other children when begging in big Thai cities like Bangkok. The goal of GEcsn is and has always been the rehabilitation and reintegration of children in their families and communities. For children with strong intellectual disabilities this has been challenging and as there were no projects or programs that accepted these children in Cambodia, it started a pioneer project giving transitional shelter and education to children with intellectual disabilities that could not be reintegrated within their families in Phnom Penh in 2003. By 2014, the children originally welcomed in the program in Phnom Penh had become young adults who could not continue living with children in the project. As there was no project to welcome young adults with intellectual disabilities in Cambodia, GEcsn supported Damnok Toek's ('Goutte d'eau Cambodia') decision to build its own new and innovative program, the Kep Farm - a living place and social enterprise for young adults with intellectual disabilities.
