Grant-giving foundation

What you need to know

We do not support projects unrelated to public health and nutrition, basic research without applied outcomes, or initiatives lacking ethical standards. Proposals unrelated to low-income countries, insufficiently detailed, or outside our mission's scope are also ineligible. Non-scientific programs and operational costs are not considered. Applicants must submit a Pre-Request on StiftungSchweiz.ch as the first step. If aligned with our goals, a full grant proposal invitation follows. Submissions must include detailed, evidence-based insights on sustainability, health impact, and capacity-building. Our grants prioritize projects that are scientifically rigorous and address significant public health challenges.

  1. Goals

Our mission is to advance knowledge in public health and nutrition by funding innovative research. We aim to address pressing global nutrition challenges, promote sustainability, and strengthen health systems. By supporting groundbreaking initiatives, we strive to improve health outcomes and empower communities in developing countries for long-term, meaningful change.

  2. Funding Policy

The Foundation supports research projects aligned with its mission to enhance public health and nutrition in low-income countries. Priority is given to studies with measurable outcomes, sustainability, and capacity-building. Funding decisions are based on scientific quality, alignment with strategic goals, and public health relevance in both the short and long term. Eligible Institutions Eligible institutions include departments or institutes from universities, hospitals, and other higher education establishments in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Joint applications from multiple institutions, particularly South-South collaborations, are encouraged. North-South collaborative applications may also be considered, provided the following criteria are met: (i) the Principal Investigator is from the South and the proposal has relevance to nutritional problems of the South. (ii) most of the budget is earmarked for the South; and (iii) demonstration upon completion of the project of institution- and capacity building in a sustainable manner in the South. Capacity building is a central focus for all applications submitted to the Foundation. Therefore, all applications must include a component dedicated to training, human resources, and capacity building for the developing world. • Key Involvement of Graduate Students and Young Investigators: Ideally, graduate students or young investigators should play a pivotal role and, where possible, be designated as Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI. • Established Researchers: Established researchers may apply but must clearly indicate the capacity-building component and beneficiaries. Established investigators alone are generally ineligible unless they address innovative, well-justified research questions in developing countries. These applications must outline the capacity and educational components in the host country and the long-term sustainability of research within the host institution. • Non-affiliated Researchers: Applications from non-affiliated researchers can be considered only in exceptional cases.

  3. Principles

We value scientific excellence, sustainability, and relevance. Projects must address significant public health and nutritional needs, focusing on measurable outcomes and capacity-building. Transparency and accountability are the foundation of all grant decisions. Our funding supports research that is ethical, evidence-based, and aligned with our mission to improve health and well-being worldwide. Research must address one of the following areas. Exceptionally, "Other" can be chosen, but it must be accompanied by an explanation. • Maternal and child nutrition, including breastfeeding and complementary feeding • Macro- and micronutrient deficiencies and imbalances • Interactions between infection and nutrition • Nutrition education and health promotion • Other (requires explanation)
