  1. Funding Policy

The CALEO Foundation’s management plan together with the Wildlife Management Teams on the ground, conserve and sustain the ecological integrity of the lands, ensuring its long-term protection and sustainability for the enjoyment of future generations to come. The CALEO Foundation awards scholarships and also supports institutions promoting art and artists. The focus of the Foundation’s current conservation investments and projects is very much within South Africa.

Funding History

Rehabilitation, Restoration and Reintroduction - Since 2002, it has undergone an incredible transformation. With a dedicated conservation team that performs methodical and scientific monitoring, there’s an ongoing process of restoring the region’s biodiversity through rehabilitation, restoration and the reintroduction of locally extinct animal species.
Flora at Sanbona - Over 55 percent of the Little Karoo is moderately degraded and only 18 percent in a pristine condition. Lower soil nutrients and loss of palatable plant species are results of this degradation and the challenge is developing the correct balance between improving soil and plant quality, herbivore densities and predator populations in order to facilitate the rehabilitation of the ecosystem.

Jock Environmental Monitoring Unit (JEMU) - The purchase in 2016 of Jock Safari Lodge was in line with the CALEO Foundation’s conservation ethics to protect, restore and sustain wildlife and flora resources and the unique habitats in which they flourish so that future generations will be able to enjoy them. A priority, the fight against the scourge of rhino poaching.

Savanna Vulture project - The results from the Savanna Vulture Project have greatly improved our general understanding of what is needed to conserve vultures in the Greater Kruger National Park. These findings have also informed the Multi-species Action Plan for Africa-Eurasian Vultures, which will guide conservation actions for these birds in Southern Africa. Today, work continues on various aspects of vulture biology in the Lowveld.
Fine Art - Continuing the great traditions of conservation that Sanbona uphold, the Fitzgerald Collection at Sanbona could not have found a more wonderful home where it can be viewed in spectacular surrounds. The collection is the only one of its kind in South Africa that can be viewed by the public. By putting the collection on show in Sanbona, the wonderous world of African Tribal Art is made accessible to all who wish to engage with it and further enhance the splendid African experience of the spectacular Sanbona Wildlife Reserve.
