  3. Goals

The main AO Alliance objective is to build sustainable local healthcare-worker capacity in the treatment of broken bones and injured patients. Two other important objectives are to raise awareness of the burden of injuries, support policy making and advance gender equality in trauma & orthopedic healthcare. Training is conducted locally with local teachers and fellowship recipients are trained in an LMIC environment.

  4. Principles

The values of the AO Alliance are partnership, empowerment and sustainability. AO Alliance is a leader in fracture care education (operative and nonoperative) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in Sub-Saharan Africa (26 countries) and Asia (8 countries), serving trauma and orthopedic healthcare workers (surgeons, general practitioners, operating room personnel, nurses, orthopedic clinical officers) from underserved rural areas. We develop fracture management (direct) and faculty education (train-the-trainer) curricula with leading international trauma and orthopedic surgeons and educators. The AO Alliance has an unparalleled network of local T&O faculty in LMICs in Sub-Saharan Africa (200+) and Asia (100+). We work bottom up: in every country, we work with local surgeons and allied healthcare workers to plan and implement programs supported by skilled and experienced local AO Alliance project officers. We have comprehensive country initiatives in Malawi, Ethiopia, Ghana, Burkina Faso, and the Gambia – based on national needs assessments with relevant local stakeholders. We are actively shaping the future of fracture care in LMICs in a cost-effective manner to contribute to sustainable healthcare systems.

  5. Measures

We implement programs that enhance local fracture-care capacity for sustainable impact.
